Isolation ?
"[...] For the same reasons, many see an exercise like the flye or the pec deck as sparing to the triceps and isolating the pectorals. More Weiderisms. Bleckh!
Well suppose in Workout A you did some type of triceps work, say,
extensions. Suppose in Workout B you preceded extensions with a set of
pec deck flyes. You figure that the flyes, being an isolation exercise, will not affect the extensions much, outside of maybe some labored breathing. Well, the flyes may isolate the chest in your mind, but the truth of it is that it requires a lot of cocontraction of stabilizers and neutralizers to execute a flye. One of the larger contributors are the biceps.
In fact, you might have felt it once or twice – that tremendous burning in
your biceps during or following a set of flyes (particularly pec deck flyes) to failure. Often, the trainee will pay it no mind – since flyes, he thinks, are an isolation exercise for the chest. But the truth of the matter is that following this with triceps extensions could implicate the hypothesis of the fatigued antagonist, and boost your triceps work, even if only a little. Of course, it’s not going to help you set the world on fire, but it could give your progress a false positive, and tell you something erroneous about your exercise prescription."
