At age 40, my bodyweight was about 186 pounds, whereas my peak was 194 pounds at age 35 (which involved a carb depletion/load). Since implementing this method (it invokes an optimum number of muscle fibers throughout the FULL ROM... relative to the load), I have brought my weight up to 198.5 pounds, with the same waist measurement (which I find odd since my abs appear thicker than before). I use expensive body comp methodology together with flexibile steel tape measures, and have photos. I know what is happening; something I could not achieve through traditional methods.
I'm training a Canadian National level bodybuilder who, since being off roids in late August, has maintained close to the same body fat percentage, and yet weighs 16 pounds heavier (from 244 to 260 pounds), with increases in his body parts (and some body parts simply looking different and more pronounced). He has been using this methodology since the competition. Most bodybuilders shrink when off the juice... this person has maintained his hardness and has grown (it was my original intention to have him maintain as much as possible; this was unexpected).
If you think this is nothing more than marketing, then I suggest you avoid the book. And if you receive second-hand information on how to apply it, and you get 'something' out of it, then you can imagine the detail inside the book's pages.
JReps is about performing high volume contractions in a low volume of sets, while optimizing each zone (and muscle fiber recruitment) of an exercise's range of motion.
This book explains the intricacies and physiological reasonings as to why The Johnston Rep Method will do the following:
Unique and increased muscular stimulation that produces superior inroading/fatigue never before experienced.
Enhanced muscle pump never before experienced after only a handful of sets. And when taking it up a notch with JReps Extreme, a national level bodybuilder claimed that the pump felt as incredible as it did when he used anabolic steroids!
More thorough stimulation of every part of the ROM of any exercise; you eliminate the sticking point by making each aspect or zone of the ROM equally challenging to invoke a greater degree of muscle fibers.
An increase in mental focus that is required to undertake the concentrated demands of JReps; you become more in tune to your mechanics, quality of execution and the training effect.
Determine your optimum number of sets per muscle based on a particular effect of JReps.
Directions on how to optimize the most common exercises on both machines and free weights.
In a conventional curl, it seems that you are getting weaker as a curl moves from the starting point to the sticking point -- when in fact you are getting stronger; and it seems you are getting stronger after you pass the sticking point -- when in fact you are getting weaker. Or, at least, the efficiency ratio is improving when it appears to be declining -- and vice versa. But all of these false impressions are due to the fact that the resistance in a conventional curl is reciprocal in nature -- and thus not constant throughout the movement.

While I would dearly love too Darrell I promised Brian Johnston I wouldn't "let the cat out of the bag". Next year more people will know about them and be performing them, reaping the great benefits I have the past 3 weeks! Brian is really onto something here, I just wish I had discovered them and used them years earlier.
I strongly believe JReps could very well turn the training world on its head as they do such a complete and thorough job of working each muscle - enhancing each exercise. I can't see a reason to perform normal reps again, with JReps being unlike anything I have tried during the past near three decades. I am thriving nicely on them and can't wait to get back into the gym to perform them again each workout!
As I sit here typing I have this weird buzz going on inside my biceps from 3 sets this morning. Cable curls were quite nice performed JRep Extreme style, but the 2 sets of preacher curls that followed is where the damage was done. Normally I avoid preacher curls - have for years - as I struggle having reasonably long arms. Thanks to JReps this is a mute issue, so they are now a bicep mainstay I plan to remain on indefinitely on my quest to 18" arms. Same with pushdowns - a so-so exercise - JReps completely revamped those too! My poor triceps are so depleted after a mere 2 sets that my arms literally cease up and refuse to bend!
DB Flyes JRep style are a joy to perform... if having a super swollen chest resembling Dolly Parton interests you. Brian himself speaks about having "two breasts" when he is done... which is bold as that was what I felt and saw but would never post on the net! Legs are a whole new world when implimenting JReps, squats, leg curls, and calf raises all taking on a new feel and tremendous deepseated pump afterwards!
Like I said, if I was free to do so I would tell everything about JReps, write a whole article even! But as I can't I'm afraid the best I can do is tell you how effective and unique they are and bide my time till the world discovers their potential.
